Summer is a time for beach days, swimming pools and outdoor fun — but for thousands of Australians living with lower limb swelling, these everyday activities can feel difficult or out of reach. To help change that, National Beat the Swell Day has been launched as a new annual awareness day focused on lower limb swelling (also known as 'oedema'). The day aims to improve understanding of what causes swelling, why it matters, and what support and treatment options are available. The first-ever National Beat the Swell Day will be held on Thursday 19 February 2026, shining a spotlight on a condition that is common, often misunderstood, and frequently left untreated. Lower limb swelling can have many causes, including problems with circulation, lymphatic health, mobility or chronic illness. Without the right care, it can worsen over time and lead to infections, skin damage and reduced quality of life. As part of Beat the Swell Day, new FREE, easy-to-understand resources are being developed to help people living with oedema better understand their condition and know when to seek help. These resources will focus on everyday management, early warning signs and practical steps people can take to protect their leg health. Events and expert voicesBeat the Swell Day will be supported by a range of events and expert discussions across Australia, including a major event in Melbourne featuring leading health professionals and people with lived experience of lymphoedema. These conversations will focus on early detection, treatment options and the importance of recognising swelling early. You can stay connected through both the Wounds Australia (@woundsaus) and Wound Aware (@woundaware) social channels. Learn moreWoundaware.org is the home of Beat the Swell, where information and resources for people living with lower limb swelling will be shared in the lead-up to National Beat the Swell Day and beyond. Beat the Swell is an initiative of Wounds Australia with Mole Digital Australasia and these valued partners: the Australian and New Zealand Society for Vascular Surgery, the Australasian Lymphology Association and The Pharmacy Guild Australia. |
