Wound Awareness Week Clinician Perspectives

Wound Awareness Week is increasing the voice of patients suffering from wounds and the clinicians that are committed to healing them.

We took the opportunity to meet up with Dr Michelle Gibb (Nurse Practitioner, Wound Management, QLD), Caroline Wilson-Veamatahau (Plastics & Wound CNC, Westmead Hospital) and Jennifer Yanga (Plastics CNC, Blacktown Hospital) to get their insights on the importance of Wound Awareness Week and wound care in Australia.

What does Wound Awareness Week mean to you?

MG: Wounds Awareness Week is a great way to raise awareness about the impact of wounds. They affect so many people from all walks of life and, despite being a global health problem, wounds are not something that people talk about or have much understanding of. Wounds Awareness Week provides a platform to stimulate discussion and get people thinking about solutions.

CW: Wound Awareness week is about increasing the awareness for the prevention and treatment of wounds and increasing patient awareness to seek medical help.

JY: For me, it an opportunity and space to raise wound awareness not only to healthcare clinicians but also the community and be able to highlight the importance of proper wound care management for each individual.

Are you seeing any changes in the way patients are seeking treatment and the way their wounds are being managed?

MG: Consumers have a greater awareness of the wound problem since the Royal Commission into Aged Care. There are heightened expectations around the safety and quality of care provided in long-term care environments, particularly regarding pressure injuries. In this digital age, consumers are more inclined to go to their favourite search engine to find out more about their wound problem and types of treatments available. In my experience, they are becoming much more engaged in their care and more readily ask questions if they're not sure about outcomes or treatment strategies.

CW: At times, you see the patient is listening regarding their wound care, however, at follow up their wound has deteriorated because they have not complied with their treatment. Patients are waiting for their wound to severely deteriorate before they seek medical advice.

JY: More patients now prefer virtual consultations, and some are specifically looking for wound clinics or programs that can provide therapeutic wound care and dressing supplies at minimal out of pocket cost.

What advice do you have for clinicians treating wounds?

MG: Caring for a person with a wound starts with undertaking a comprehensive holistic assessment and then repeating that assessment periodically to measure outcomes or the effectiveness of interventions. Assessment helps us to work out the aetiology of the wound, identify factors likely to be impacting on the healing process, guide interventions including dressing selection, and to formulate goals of care that are focused on the person with the wound.

CW: Don't judge a book by its cover. Attend to a thorough assessment. Assess the "WHOLE PATIENT, NOT JUST THE HOLE".

JY: Assess, listen and treat the patient holistically, as there is always something going on beyond those wounds
